Original-First Moon-Oil-Gold Leaf on canvas
Sold out
This latest piece captures the essence of the first full moon following the Lunar New Year—a cherished occasion symbolising family reunion and deeply resonant with Yi's grandmother's generation.
Through her painting, Yi seeks to evoke a nostalgic appreciation for family values and the profound love embodied by mothers.
"First Moon" marks the latest installment in Shizico Yi's Sunlit series, which celebrates the vibrant colour of yellow and its profound healing effects on well-being.
The painting was painted with the distinctive and signature element of Shizico's artistic repertoire -- the use of gilded gold. This visual language becomes an instrument through which she plays with space, imparting an effect reminiscent of Japanese block prints and Kintsugi(金継ぎ), the art of "golden joinery."
The incorporation of gilded gold adds a fresh language to the painting, introducing another dimension that deepens the fascination inherent in Sunlit Series.

About the Artwork:
This painting is Shizico's love letter to London!
Tube stations intricately map the recollections of Shizico's life over the past decades in London;
Sloane Square, echoing the Chelsea Flower Show and Saatchi Gallery, Piccadilly Circus, marking the Royal Academy and West End theatres, Leicester Square, embracing her most cherished National Gallery, Portrait Gallery, and Cassart for her art supplies,
disembarking at Pimlico, strolling through Chelsea College of Arts and Tate Britain, then boarding the Water-Bus to Tate Modern,
crossing the River Thames back to St. Paul station,
catching the Central line, the next stop... her studio, adorned with her Favor Memorial Garden, a sanctuary where art and memories intertwine.
This piece is part of the Spring Cat and Sunshine Factory Exhibition.
The paintings in this Exhibition aspire to push impressionism into the realms of Matisse, engaging in a bold visual language with colours and embracing the simplicity of lines and forms.
Shizico then ventured even closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, grounding the new works in a lineage less concerned with realistic representation and more focused on the colours and the meaning embedded within the brushstrokes. The aim is to exalt the power of imaginary spaces.

"Some paintings take years," Shizico Yi told the curator, revealing that this particular artwork falls into that category. It's a piece she returned to after years of living with it, a creative journey that had a moment of revelation inspired by Claude Monet's The Rouen Cathedral Series, which Claude Monet concurrently painting up to 14 versions of it, shifting from one canvas to another based on the changing play of light throughout the day. Shizico Yi drew inspiration from Monet's bold exploration of contrasts between light and dark in the sky and the architecture. His daring use of white in this series intrigued her.
Fast forward five years, Shizico finally uncovered the essence of the original drawing on this canvas. This prompted her to experiment with the interplay of white and dark tones in the background. The result is a breathtaking visual feast of colours and light, showcasing intricate forms and a profound sense of spatial depth.
This painting is in the Line-Up collection Spring Exhibition 2024, GSY Studio Gallery, UK.

Primary Colour Series-Spring in Autumn is one of Shizico Yi's latest projects, inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition.
The series is a continuation of her "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develops her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow and the celebration of the sun light which bring much needed warmth in the UK.
With strokes of gold, gesso and acrylic and oil, she orchestrates a visual symphony.
Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf on yellow gesso and oil paint contrast with the inky black brushstrokes. She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour and black line drawing. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.

In her latest series, titled 'Prayers' Shizico employs various type of Dahlias as symbols of peace. Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope for life.
The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems (Hope Spring) that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown. After nature reclaims the places where people once lived, this poem reflects the enduring impact of war, with families broken and displaced.
While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states. As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones. Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.
In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.
The 'Sunlit' series is Shizico's exploration of the colour yellow and its impact on individuals dealing with grief. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints and a nod to calligraphy tradition.

Sunlit Series-Summer Bloom 2022-23
Sold out
Original on Paper:
This is one of the Summer Bloom series started in 2022, it took Shizico 2 years to finish this particular work. Shizico lost her beloved dog Favor to Wobbler Syndrome after four years of battle with a neurology disease in 2017. Shizico started gardening in 2015; she made a garden for Favor to recover. After Favour died, this garden project continued as Favour Memorial Garden in memory of his precious presence. (2015- 2024 on-going), the project called Constant Gardener, an on-going project in memory of Favor.
Alongside gardening, Shizico started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time. Visually, these paintings are inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition. The series called "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develop her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow (hence the application of Gold Leaf).
This painting is featured in the exhibition Golden Summer at GSY Studio Gallery. London 2023 . It is included in the permanent Archive at Shizicoyi.com https://www.shizicoyi.com/goldensummer2023.html#/
This series aims to capture a unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination. © Shizico Yi

Golden Summer-Sunlit, Rose, Heather and Lilies 2023
Shizico spent three days painting this plein air in her sunlit garden. She applied 550 Ture Gold paint and Van Gogh Yellow creating a stunning backdrop which served as the canvas for a magnificent festival of roses and lilies.
At the top of the canopy, vibrant Rosa Albertines exuded a heavenly scent, adding an enchanting touch to the scene. The lilies, captured in their budding stage during Shizico's painting process, hinted at their imminent blooming, which would grace her garden in just a few days.
In the foreground, heathers anchored the composition, nearby the trees, a bird feeder enticed the birds. And if you look closely, you might spot a magical cat playfully hiding amidst the shrubs, adding a touch of whimsy to the already captivating scene.
Within this single picture, Shizico portrays a harmonious blend of two mono-ish tones, yellow and black, fragrances, and hidden wonders that invite viewers to immerse in the beauty of nature.

" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.
- These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series. " ----Shizico Yi March 2023
