Spring Exhibition

Spring Exhibition Series paintings are pushing the Impressionism toward Matisse; having a daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms; also moving even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin. These new works were made under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes; they are here to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.

About

« A Cat, a Mirror and the Garden » is a painting about how spaces merge as one; the space of nature, the space of the viewer, and the reflective space in the mirror. Each space occupies its own time.

I painted this painting when London was under 6 degrees, yet nature finds its rhythm; these fritillaria bulbs were underground over the long winter, and despite rain and cold, they bloom into a sea of colours; they are the symbol of defiance, the steel grit of living we can find in humble flowers.

Spring Exhibition Series:

" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.

These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series.

I didn’t know where to start nor end and that is the beauty of it;

the Start and the End of this major Spring Exhibition are the in-between chapters, the artworks that come before and after would continue to take this series forward.

For now, in this period, I have curated 11 works telling a chapter of Spring Story " ---

About the painting:

This painting is the artist's love letter to London.

Tube stations trace the memory of the last decade of Shizico's artistic journey in London; Sloane Square, the stop of the Chelsea Flower Show and Saatchi Gallery, Piccadilly Circus, the stop of Royal Academy and WestEnd theatres, Leicester Square, her most dear National Gallery, Portrait Gallery, and Cassart where she gets art supplies, off at Pimlico, walking through Chelsea Collage of Arts and Tate Britain, then taking the Water-Bus from there to Tate Modern, walking across River Thames back to St. Paul station getting Central line, next stop... her studio with her Favor Memorial Garden where she makes her arts and memories.

It is a part of the Spring series.

- Shizico Yi captures the beauty of early spring, documenting the first blossoms in her garden under the warm morning light. Her painting celebrates the vibrant spring sky and the soft, filtered light shining through clusters of delicate pink tulips. The pink tulips, arranged elegantly, enhance the scene with grace and tranquillity, adding visual appeal perfectly contrasting with the serene blue and lively yellow, evoking a sense of renewal and new beginnings. Shizico Yi's artwork symbolises the arrival of warmth, growth, and beauty, portraying the awakening of nature in spring.

Her use of colour and composition conveys the joy and anticipation of witnessing nature's transformation after a long, cold winter in 2022.

Portrait of the Artist as a Cat- Large Fuji Limited Edition of 10

£0.00

Sold out

67 x 50 CM, made on Fuji Pro-Museum Archival photograph paper

Limited Edition 10 only!

Artwork description:

The painting is one of the series – Spring Cats and the Sunny Factory. This Artist's Proof is the fruit of the first stage of the painting process. Yi then carries on finishing the painting with another dreamscape and story. Therefore, she transforms the picture from existence to history and memory of a painting.

The name Portrait of the Artist as a Cat says it all; she placed herself in a semi-tropical greenhouse full of colours and a body of water in the background, despite she painted the painting on a very cold February. She portrayed herself as a big cat, an attempt to bring herself closer to her cat’s world, this is the first painting about her rescue cat, Sonny. Later on, she painted the cat in another major painting, which inspired the name of the series- Spring Cats and the Sunny Factory. © Shizico Yi

About the Artwork:

This painting is Shizico's love letter to London!

Tube stations intricately map the recollections of Shizico's life over the past decades in London;

Sloane Square, echoing the Chelsea Flower Show and Saatchi Gallery, Piccadilly Circus, marking the Royal Academy and West End theatres, Leicester Square, embracing her most cherished National Gallery, Portrait Gallery, and Cassart for her art supplies,

disembarking at Pimlico, strolling through Chelsea College of Arts and Tate Britain, then boarding the Water-Bus to Tate Modern,

crossing the River Thames back to St. Paul station,

catching the Central line, the next stop... her studio, adorned with her Favor Memorial Garden, a sanctuary where art and memories intertwine.

This piece is part of the Spring Cat and Sunshine Factory Exhibition.

The paintings in this Exhibition aspire to push impressionism into the realms of Matisse, engaging in a bold visual language with colours and embracing the simplicity of lines and forms.

Shizico then ventured even closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, grounding the new works in a lineage less concerned with realistic representation and more focused on the colours and the meaning embedded within the brushstrokes. The aim is to exalt the power of imaginary spaces.

About Spring Exhibition Series:

" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.

These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series.

-After a period of time, the tension of the canvas might become loose. If this occurs, it can be regained by genteelly hammer-in the canvas wedges fitted at the back of your Canvas Edition.

About Spring Exhibition Series:

" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.

These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series.

I didn’t know where to start nor end and that is the beauty of it;

the Start and the End of this major Spring Exhibition are the in-between chapters, the artworks that come before and after would continue to take this series forward.

For now, in this period, I have curated 11 works telling a chapter of Spring Story " ---

Shizico Yi, PhD in Fine Art based in London.
A Letter from Shizico

I paint moments, I cast time in sculptures, I do installations to open space, I make films to hold true,
I design and make clothes,

I am the dying breed of the artist that really makes things;
I have a Ph.D. in Fine Art, I am based in London, but home is where my animals are, on earth or in heaven.
Oh, I am a gardener too,

I want to keep on making works that connect to you,
I believe that arts should be available to all, not just to a small group.
I also believe good arts hold value in time because time tells the truth, and sound arts speak with that voice.
I hope through this online shop that, you can own good art,
these artworks can bring enlightenment to your daily life,

hope you can join me, to own a piece of me through having my artworks.
so I can keep doing good works
and with your collection,
we can grow old together,
that is a sweet thing that I like to do
and I cannot do it without you.

I have set up my Studio Gallery,
where I create artworks, do installations, casting sculptures and making gardens;
if possible, to run an in-house design studio for my clothesline in coming years;
my clothes are rather lovely; I hope one day you can wear them too.
It sounds a lot, I know,
but I promise you, I will have only one cat and no dog.
my garden has 100s of birds and dozens of squirrels every day,
few foxes in the night,
one moon, million stars,
one wish,
to make art.

With love and gratitude
Yours sincerely
Shizico Yi
