Inspired by Dylan Thomas’s legendary poem Do not go gentle into that good night, this painting is a celebration of life in its maturity and ageing.
At its centre is Rosa Albertine—an old English rose that blooms only once each early summer, offering a brief, glorious moment of festivity and fragrance. To Shizico, it is a living symbol of a life fully lived.
The painting was created en plein air in the artist’s own garden, where she planted Rosa Albertine in 2016 as a tribute before the passing of her beloved dog, Favor. These rare, once-a-year blooming roses became a yearly reminder of those cherished summers they shared. With every bloom, she is transported back to those days filled with love, scent, and sunlight.
This work captures that memory—a moment of loss, beauty, and profound connection—frozen tenderly in time.

Summer Night is a part of The Summer Bloom Series, an ongoing project that Shizico Yi works on every summer in her garden.
This painting captures a view from the east end of the garden, looking towards the west gate where old giant trees frame wildflower areas on both sides. Shizico chose the colour blue to represent the night sky, reflecting her experience of painting plein air into the summer nights in her garden.
Her paintings stand as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques and the profound inspiration she draws from her natural surroundings especially her own gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her very own landscape.

About the Series:
Summer Bloom Plein Air project is an ongoing project that Shizico Yi works on painting plein air in her garden and on location through out the season.
She began gardening in 2015 to create a large, healing space for her then ill, elderly dog. After her Labrador passed away, this memorial garden became a source of inspiration for her art and provided a place of solace, draw profound inspiration from her natural surroundings especially her own gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her very own landscape.

About Summer Bloom Series:
Summer Bloom series began in 2022, where Shizico Yi celebrating the season by painting en plein air in her garden. This painting La Vie en Rose, is a part of the Summer Bloom series.
Shizico lost her beloved dog, Favor, after a four-year battle with the neurological disease in 2017. Shizico began gardening as a way to create a healing space for Favor. After his passing in 2017, the garden evolved into Favor Memorial Garden, dedicated to his precious presence.
This gardening project honour his memory, called Constant Gardener which started in 2015, continues to this day.
In the last decade, In addition to gardening, Shizico began creating a series of drawings and plein air paintings in this Memorial Garden, capturing the blooms and seasons to preserve them in time.
In 2024, Shizico embarks on a fresh chapter with her new rose garden. The first ten newly planted roses in her Memorial Garden project inspired this series of rose paintings.
Colours are the emotional device for Shizico in making these paintings, rather than roses and landscape's real-life hues. For instance, she painted the Double white roses in yellow hue, keeping the shrub's shape but transforming its colour.
This approach, while challenging, allows her to filter her view from reality to an imaginary landscape.
By painting colours this way, Shizico becomes highly sensitive to tones and shapes, rather than habitually matching colours to reality.
This self imposed technique gives her landscapes a touch of magical aura in this series of landscape of roses.
** Each Proof is hand-painted with details using original paint. Therefore, each Proof is unique, and the tone of colour will be slightly varied because it is hand-mixed and painted. The picture here is one of the very first Proof Editions.

Summer 2024, the avenue of 130-year-old Lime trees surrounding Shizico’s new cottage Garden captivated and inspired Shizico Yi to paint on a larger scale; with their towering heights, they create a breath-taking canopy which carves the sky into intricate negative spaces. Shizico decided a new approach to paint negative spaces between the trees rather than the positive forms of the trees and her garden landscape.
This major shift allows her to explore the interplay of light and shadow in an unique way, emphasising the negative spaces between the trees and the sky above.
In addition, Shizico painted this series in the colours she desired, rather than landscape's real-life hues. These self-imposed directions give her landscapes a touch of magical aura in this Summer Bloom Series; this stands as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques, also highlights the profound inspiration she draws from the natural surroundings especially her gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her own landscape.
Shizico Yi began Summer Bloom series from 2022 to celebrate the season by painting en plein air, stepping away from the studio to immerse the painting process in nature over 6-8 hours almost each day. Her canvas is exposed to the elements—rain, wind, and sun—infusing her artworks with the vivid energy and raw force of the outdoors. The spontaneity of painting in nature brings a dynamic, living quality to every brushstroke.

This painting is one of the Summer Bloom series Shizico Yi started in 2022.
Veronica and Hydrangea (in the painting) are the summer elements in her garden, Shizico cultivated these deciduous shrubs in 2015, and since, they blossom from late spring into November faithfully every year.
They are symbols of longevity and loyalty like old friends.
Alongside gardening, Shizico started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial Garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time on canvas and paper.
Shizico Yi built this Memorial garden in memory of her beloved ones, her late 16 years old dog she lost in 2017, and her late partner who died in 2020. This painting is a part of the series, Summer Bloom.

The painting captures two major spring trees in the artist’s garden, painted plein-air in the garden for three days, later on, Shizico Yi added the important locations of London that are dear to her memories; in this painting St Paul’s Cathedral could be viewed from Ludgate Hill.
The language of two trees: Cherry Prunus and Forsythia (was planted in 2015 by Shizico Yi in memory of her grandmother.) Both trees bloom at the same time in early Spring when the weather is still very much like winter, the sight of these colourful blooms wakes up the senses and brings hope after a long cold winter.

Shizico lost her beloved dog-son Favor to Wobbler Syndrome after four years of battle with this neurology disease in 2017.
Constant Gardener is an ongoing project in memory of Favor. Shizico started gardening in 2015; she took it as a project to make a garden for Favor to recover. After Favor died, this garden project continued as Favor Memorial Garden in memory of his precious presence. (2015- 2022 ongoing)
Alongside gardening, Shizico started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time.

Study of Favor from memory, who was adorned with blooms from his memorial garden, signed and numbered by Shizico Yi.
About the painting:
To mark the 5th anniversary of her dog's death, Shizico recalled a moment Favor was sitting in the kitchen waiting for his breakfast, and she painted summer blooms in Favor's garden within the drawing of him. The painting comments on how our loved one's life continues in the form of one's memory. Nature and the seasons symbolise time and the renewal of remembrance.

Each piece is a subtly variation in brushstrokes and colours, reflecting Shizico Yi’s hand and process on the day of painting. As she mixes her paints freshly each day, the colours also take on gentle shifts, making every piece a unique work.
Each edition is hand-signed and numbered by the artist, Shizico Yi.

About the painting:
The original oil painting was painted in plain air in Shizico's garden. She documented the memory of her late partner, who enjoyed his cigarettes over the years in that particular corner of the garden.
This painting is a part of the project, [ Constant Gardener ] which artist has been developing since 2015.
[ Constant Gardener ] is an ongoing project in memory of artist's late dog and late partner. In 2015, Shizico Yi started gardening to make a garden for Favour to recover from a neurologic illness. After Favour died aged 16, this garden project continued as Favour Memorial Garden in memory of the loss of one's loved ones.
Later on, alongside gardening, Shizico Yi started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial Garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time.

This Limited Edition is hand painted finish, hand stretched over a wooden stretcher, therefore it doesn't need to be framed. Of cause, you can frame it with your local framer, if you need advice on framing, just give us a shout.

About the Artist
Shizico Yi is available for commission.
Dr. Shizico Yi is a UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
