Golden Summer: Sunlit Series - Selected Works Available
Sunlit Series-Summer Bloom 2022-23
Sold out
Original on Paper:
This is one of the Summer Bloom series started in 2022, it took Shizico 2 years to finish this particular work. Shizico lost her beloved dog Favor to Wobbler Syndrome after four years of battle with a neurology disease in 2017. Shizico started gardening in 2015; she made a garden for Favor to recover. After Favour died, this garden project continued as Favour Memorial Garden in memory of his precious presence. (2015- 2024 on-going), the project called Constant Gardener, an on-going project in memory of Favor.
Alongside gardening, Shizico started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time. Visually, these paintings are inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition. The series called "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develop her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow (hence the application of Gold Leaf).
This painting is featured in the exhibition Golden Summer at GSY Studio Gallery. London 2023 . It is included in the permanent Archive at Shizicoyi.com https://www.shizicoyi.com/goldensummer2023.html#/
This series aims to capture a unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination. © Shizico Yi

Golden Summer-Sunlit, Rose, Heather and Lilies 2023
Shizico spent three days painting this plein air in her sunlit garden. She applied 550 Ture Gold paint and Van Gogh Yellow creating a stunning backdrop which served as the canvas for a magnificent festival of roses and lilies.
At the top of the canopy, vibrant Rosa Albertines exuded a heavenly scent, adding an enchanting touch to the scene. The lilies, captured in their budding stage during Shizico's painting process, hinted at their imminent blooming, which would grace her garden in just a few days.
In the foreground, heathers anchored the composition, nearby the trees, a bird feeder enticed the birds. And if you look closely, you might spot a magical cat playfully hiding amidst the shrubs, adding a touch of whimsy to the already captivating scene.
Within this single picture, Shizico portrays a harmonious blend of two mono-ish tones, yellow and black, fragrances, and hidden wonders that invite viewers to immerse in the beauty of nature.

- Shizico Yi captures the beauty of early spring, documenting the first blossoms in her garden under the warm morning light. Her painting celebrates the vibrant spring sky and the soft, filtered light shining through clusters of delicate pink tulips. The pink tulips, arranged elegantly, enhance the scene with grace and tranquillity, adding visual appeal perfectly contrasting with the serene blue and lively yellow, evoking a sense of renewal and new beginnings. Shizico Yi's artwork symbolises the arrival of warmth, growth, and beauty, portraying the awakening of nature in spring.

Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night. 2023
Sold out
ON Hold-hizico takes on the inspiration of the legendary poet, Dylan Thomas, the poem, Do not go gentle into that good night, to celebrate life in its ageing; as Rosa Albertine only flowers once in early Summer with the most festive blooms and heavenly scents, a symbol of a fully lived life.
About the Painting :
Painted Plein Air, in Artist's own garden of her very own planted memorial roses.
This is Rosa Albertine, the first Old English variety Artist Shizico Yi planted in 2016 in her garden before her late dog died; Old English Roses are the rare ones that are scented but only flower once a year. This made it more endearing for Shizico anticipating their arrival each year. And excited by the smell which reminds her the scent of that summer when Favour, her late dog was still there in the garden with her.

About the Painting:
The painting was painted Plein Air, in Artist's own garden of the memorial roses she planted.
This is Rosa Albertine, the first Old English variety Artist Shizico Yi planted in her garden in 2016, before her late dog died.
Old English Roses are the rare ones that are scented but only flower once a year.
That is why the new modern varieties are most popular because they flower repeatedly but the breeding process knocks off their scents. This made it more endearing for Shizico anticipating their arrival each year. And excited by the smell which reminds her the scent of that summer when Favour, her late dog was still there in the garden with her.
This painting is a part of Shizico's Golden Period, an exploration centred around the colour yellow and its potential healing effects for individuals experiencing grief.

Shizico Yi embarked upon an odyssey in summer to create a series of plein air paintings. This "Sunlit Series" meticulously crafted on all mediums, gold leaf gilding on her brushstrokes captured within a restrained palette of yellow, and mono palettes for each painting. With strokes of gold, gesso and acrylic, she orchestrates a symphony of artistic abstract expression upon this series of works.
Each painting within this series aims to capture a unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape at the background. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
This Sunlit Series nestles within her "Golden Period," a profound exploration centred on the captivating hue of yellow. It is a colour she believes having the healing effect to one’s wellbeing. The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of the landscape), and the artist. © Shizico Yi

Having a Cigarette amongst Yellow and Green 2021-2023
This original oil painting painted plein-air, captures a poignant moment in Shizico's garden in London over the past two years. It serves as a personal tribute to her late partner, who cherished his moments with cigarettes in that particular corner of the garden.

Golden Summer
-A celebration of Yellow. An exploration of its healing power :
Shizico dedicated her time to painting en plein air in her garden and outdoor landscapes during every spring and summer season.
This year, with great patience and passion, she incorporated gilding techniques with gold leaves, resulting in a visual language reminiscent of block prints.
Additionally, she employed True Gold 550 paint, Van Gogh Yellow Ink, gesso, and acrylics to construct a backdrop with remarkable depth.
Each canvas within the Sunlit Series serves as an ideal foundation for the magnificent nature and sunlight in their vibrant and fresh states.
More elements are captured using charcoal, pastels, and gouaches.
Throughout this series, Shizico restricts the colour palette, combines monochromatic tones, showcasing the interplay of yellow against black or layered greens with hint of burgundy red.
Through her raw brush and pen strokes, "Golden Period" represents a profound exploration of materials and a celebration of the potent artistic capabilities of the colour yellow.
The series stands as a breath-taking testament to the profound connection between the materials, the subjects explored (deeper meanings behind flowers and landscapes),
and the artist herself.--- GSY Studio 2023

A letter from Shizico I paint moments, I cast time in sculptures, I do installations to open space, I make films to hold true, I design and make clothes, I am the dying breed of the artist that really makes things; I have a Ph.D. in Fine Art, I am based in London, but home is where my animals are, on earth or in heaven. Oh, I am a gardener too, I want to keep on making works that connect to you, I believe that arts should be available to all, not just to a small group. I also believe good arts hold value in time because time tells the truth, and sound arts speak with that voice. I hope through this online shop that, you can own good art, these artworks can bring enlightenment to your daily life, hope you can join me, to own a piece of me through having my artworks. so I can keep doing good works and with your collection, we can grow old together, that is a sweet thing that I like to do and I cannot do it without you. I am trying to set up my Studio Gallery, where I can create works, do installations, hold residencies and collaborate with other artists, if possible, to run an in-house design studio for my clothesline, my clothes are rather lovely; I hope one day you can wear them too, It sounds a lot, I know, but I promise you, I will have only one cat and no dog. my garden has 100s of birds and dozens of squirrels every day, few foxes in the night, one moon, million stars, one wish, to make art. With love and gratitude Yours sincerely Shizico Yi |
