Original-Winter Blooms 2024
Winter holds a unique significance in Shizico's art practice. While she dedicates full time to plein air painting from spring to autumn, the winter months see her immersed in studio work. The method and setting Shizico chooses play a pivotal role in shaping the essence, energy, and scale of her artworks.
This particular painting was made in her indoor Studio-cum-Greenhouse. Bathed in the soft glow of Christmas lights, the warm reflections from the baubles and surrounded by her lush indoor plant collection, Shizico was able to conjure up this imaginary dreamscape of a magical winter garden of ever green frozen in time on canvas.

Original-Winter Bloom 2019-2024

"Some paintings take years," Shizico Yi told the curator, revealing that this particular artwork falls into that category. It's a piece she returned to after years of living with it, a creative journey that had a moment of revelation inspired by Claude Monet's The Rouen Cathedral Series, which Claude Monet concurrently painting up to 14 versions of it, shifting from one canvas to another based on the changing play of light throughout the day. Shizico Yi drew inspiration from Monet's bold exploration of contrasts between light and dark in the sky and the architecture. His daring use of white in this series intrigued her.
Fast forward five years, Shizico finally uncovered the essence of the original drawing on this canvas. This prompted her to experiment with the interplay of white and dark tones in the background. The result is a breathtaking visual feast of colours and light, showcasing intricate forms and a profound sense of spatial depth.
This painting is in the Line-Up collection Spring Exhibition 2024, GSY Studio Gallery, UK.

The dog passed away that autumn, resulting in years of hiatus in Shizico Yi's painting project. As a result, paintings like this one hold rarity and significance in Shizico Yi's artistic journey.

Gladiolus Set of 2 -Sunlit Series

Winter Sale Special Set Offer!
This is a set of Original paintings on Canvas Boards includes 2 paintings in this series:
Primary Colour Series-
Gladiolus Glorious + Gladiolus Common Blue
Height: 40 cm Width: 60 cm Depth: 4 mm / Each painting
These two paintings were meticulously crafted en plein air over the course of two weeks, brought to life within the enchanting sanctuary of her cottage garden nestled in the heart of London. This special set comprises two paintings from the Primary Colour Series: 'Gladiolus Glorious' and 'Gladiolus Common Blue.'
The series is a continuation of Shizico's 'Sunlit Series,' which commenced in spring 2023 all the way into winter. Here, Shizico refines her visual language, focusing on the colour yellow—a symbol of healing and a tribute to sunlight.
Each artwork in this series adheres to a restricted colour palette, allowing the depth and shading of each hue to resonate, much like the interplay of musical notes in a duet.
Shizico deliberately departs from the confines of the studio, immersing herself in the spaces she portrays ( re:plein air painting). She believes this approach transforms an artist into not just an observer but also an active participant in each moment's essence.
'Gladiolus Glorious' and 'Gladiolus Common Blue' stand as Shizico Yi's artistic endeavor, showcasing her mastery of visual language interwoven with vibrant yellow hues. Within this exploration lies a profound journey into the curative essence of yellow—a celebration of the sun's radiant embrace heralding the arrival of much-needed warmth after the prolonged chill of winter.

Snowy Sakura-GSY Gallery Archive Collection 2018
Sold out
This rare piece, recently revealed from the GSY Gallery Archive, is now making its market debut after five years. This marks its first appearance since its initial release, bringing a distinctive allure to its presence.
Shizico Yi painted this piece plein air to celebrate the arrival of spring during the late March Equinox in 2018. Despite an unusual cold front bringing snow to London during this time, the Sakura in Shizico's garden emerged resilient and captivating. While early tulips succumbed to frosty rains, the enchanting beauty of the Sakura served as profound inspiration for Shizico, culminating in the creation of this painting.
On a side note, this piece carries profound significance as one of the few works Shizico undertook since the loss of her beloved dog to a long-term illness later, the loss of her partner. The impact of these losses left Shizico unable to paint for years, and it wasn't until later in 2022 that she began to find her way back to canvas.
Grief is a recurrent theme in her works. Through her art practice and gardening, Shizico sought solace, truth, and strength in the act of living.
Her paintings, sculptures and installations were born from a complex journey of loss and rediscovery, encapsulates powerful chapters in Shizico's artistic and personal narrative.

In her most recent series, 'Prayers,' Shizico incorporates Dahlias, which bloom in the autumn, bringing vibrancy to the garden even in the early winter's chill. The innocence of a cat serves as a symbol of the vitality of children. Together, these two elements beautifully convey a sense of regeneration and hope for life."
While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states.
As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones.
Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.
In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.

Primary Colour Series-Spring in Autumn is one of Shizico Yi's latest projects, inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition.
The series is a continuation of her "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develops her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow and the celebration of the sun light which bring much needed warmth in the UK.
With strokes of gold, gesso and acrylic and oil, she orchestrates a visual symphony.
Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf on yellow gesso and oil paint contrast with the inky black brushstrokes. She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour and black line drawing. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.

Golden Summer-Sunlit, Rose, Heather and Lilies 2023
Shizico spent three days painting this plein air in her sunlit garden. She applied 550 Ture Gold paint and Van Gogh Yellow creating a stunning backdrop which served as the canvas for a magnificent festival of roses and lilies.
At the top of the canopy, vibrant Rosa Albertines exuded a heavenly scent, adding an enchanting touch to the scene. The lilies, captured in their budding stage during Shizico's painting process, hinted at their imminent blooming, which would grace her garden in just a few days.
In the foreground, heathers anchored the composition, nearby the trees, a bird feeder enticed the birds. And if you look closely, you might spot a magical cat playfully hiding amidst the shrubs, adding a touch of whimsy to the already captivating scene.
Within this single picture, Shizico portrays a harmonious blend of two mono-ish tones, yellow and black, fragrances, and hidden wonders that invite viewers to immerse in the beauty of nature.

Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night. 2023
Sold out
ON Hold-hizico takes on the inspiration of the legendary poet, Dylan Thomas, the poem, Do not go gentle into that good night, to celebrate life in its ageing; as Rosa Albertine only flowers once in early Summer with the most festive blooms and heavenly scents, a symbol of a fully lived life.
About the Painting :
Painted Plein Air, in Artist's own garden of her very own planted memorial roses.
This is Rosa Albertine, the first Old English variety Artist Shizico Yi planted in 2016 in her garden before her late dog died; Old English Roses are the rare ones that are scented but only flower once a year. This made it more endearing for Shizico anticipating their arrival each year. And excited by the smell which reminds her the scent of that summer when Favour, her late dog was still there in the garden with her.

Drawings are the most intimate works of Shizico Yi, therefore it is rare to have few only coming to the market and be available.
This is a drawing study of her cat in the garden over the few days, the nature of a cat constantly on the move made a difficult subject to draw from life, that is why to Shizico insist to paint and study from life not from pictures so it challenges the image and the process.
Gilded gold is another signature of Shizico's materials, she use the visual language of the gilded gold as an instrument to play with the space and to achieve the effect of that similar to Japanese block print, which brought another dimension to the fascination of the drawing.
Drawing vs the artist:
Shizico believes that the act of drawing is a very direct way to contour one's life and how she sees the world around her. Every line is a way to touch each fine grain of a thing. The drawing contours a person's life and memory, like people do throughout one's life.

Drawings are the most intimate works of Shizico Yi, therefore it is rare to have a few coming to the market and be available.
Artwork Description:
Shizico made this drawing plein air in her garden during the early autumn's Indian summer heat wave of 2023, later she hand painted and gilded gold leaf in the studio. This work is a part of Exhibition: Across the Universes , GSY Studio Gallery. London. 2023.
Shizico believes drawing as a direct and intimate means of contouring one's life and interpreting the surrounding world. Each line becomes a tactile connection to the nuanced details of objects and the landscapes she inhabits, creating a visual narrative that evolves with a person's life and memories.
A distinctive and signature element in Shizico's artistic repertoire is the use of gilded gold. This visual language becomes an instrument through which she plays with space, imparting an effect reminiscent of Japanese block prints and Kintsugi (金継ぎ), the art of "golden joinery." The incorporation of gilded gold adds a fresh language to the drawing, introducing another dimension that deepens the fascination inherent in Shizico's work.

Sold out
Original on Paper:
This is one of the Summer Bloom series started in 2022, it took Shizico 2 years to finish this particular work. Shizico lost her beloved dog Favor to Wobbler Syndrome after four years of battle with a neurology disease in 2017. Shizico started gardening in 2015; she made a garden for Favor to recover. After Favour died, this garden project continued as Favour Memorial Garden in memory of his precious presence. (2015- 2024 on-going), the project called Constant Gardener, an on-going project in memory of Favor.
Alongside gardening, Shizico started a series of drawings and plain air paintings in this Memorial garden, trying to keep the blooms and seasons frozen in time. Visually, these paintings are inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition. The series called "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develop her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow (hence the application of Gold Leaf).
This painting is featured in the exhibition Golden Summer at GSY Studio Gallery. London 2023 . It is included in the permanent Archive at Shizicoyi.com https://www.shizicoyi.com/goldensummer2023.html#/

About the painting:
This Sunlit Series nestles gracefully within the "Golden Period," a profound exploration centred around the captivating hue of yellow. It is a colour she believes possesses transformative healing power for those afflicted by grief.
The result is a breathtaking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of Rosa Albertine), and the artist herself.
This Sunlit Collection of 5 paintings, meticulously crafted on delicate sheets of handmade cotton paper, unveils intimate moments captured within a restrained palette of yellow, black, and white. With strokes of 550 True Gold paint, ink, charcoals, oil pastel and gouache, she orchestrates a symphony of artistic expression upon this series of works.
Each painting within this series aims to capture a unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of darker ink tones. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of the handmade cotton paper adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
** When viewing the ensemble of these five paintings, one can truly revel in the symphony of this project, embracing its grandest aspirations in their most immediate and comprehensive form.
By immersing herself in the concentrated palette and embracing the limitations of her chosen materials, Shizico reveals the very essence of painting—an expedition, a chronicle of life's purest moments—laying them upon a single surface: the painting itself.
About the series:
Shizico Yi embarked upon an odyssey this summer, surrendering to the irresistible call of her garden's roses. Their ethereal beauty and intoxicating aroma ignited an urgent artistic impulse, compelling her to create a series of plein air paintings that transcended the boundaries of ordinary perception.
-Rosa Albertine and its Meaning:
Rosa Albertine is the rose in these paintings, it is the first Old English Rose variety Artist Shizico Yi planted 6 years ago in her garden before her late dog died; Old English Roses are the rare ones that are scented but only flower once a year.
She wanted to celebrate life in its ageing in this series; as Rosa Albertine only flowers once in early Summer with the most festive blooms and heavenly scents, a symbol of a fully lived life.

Spring Exhibition Series:
Spring Exhibition Series try to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; Yi is having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then her paintings move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making these new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.
These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is her playground for this new Series- “ Spring Cats and the Sunny Factory” 2023

About
« A Cat, a Mirror and the Garden » is a painting about how spaces merge as one; the space of nature, the space of the viewer, and the reflective space in the mirror. Each space occupies its own time.
I painted this painting when London was under 6 degrees, yet nature finds its rhythm; these fritillaria bulbs were underground over the long winter, and despite rain and cold, they bloom into a sea of colours; they are the symbol of defiance, the steel grit of living we can find in humble flowers.
Spring Exhibition Series:
" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.
These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series.
I didn’t know where to start nor end and that is the beauty of it;
the Start and the End of this major Spring Exhibition are the in-between chapters, the artworks that come before and after would continue to take this series forward.
For now, in this period, I have curated 11 works telling a chapter of Spring Story " ---

About the Painting:
Shizico Yi embarked upon an odyssey in summer to create a series of plein air paintings. This "Sunlit Series" meticulously crafted on all mediums, gold leaf gilding on her brushstrokes captured within a restrained palette of yellow, and mono palettes for each painting. With strokes of gold, gesso and acrylic, she orchestrates a symphony of artistic abstract expression upon this series of works.
Each painting within this series aims to capture a unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape at the background. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
About Sunlit Series:
This Sunlit Series nestles within her "Golden Period," a profound exploration centred around the captivating hue of yellow. It is a colour she believes having the healing power for those afflicted by grief. The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of her garden), and the artist herself. © Shizico Yi

About the painting:
Howard Hodgkin had an infatuation with India, he traveled to India over 30 times in his life. Hodgkin would sit in Banganga Tank next to the water, watching people wearing colourful Saris sitting in a row, lilac, pink, orange, and yellow in between; these colours and forms in his memories would then seep into his paintings when he later painted in the studio.
Here is one of the new works, inspired by Hodgkin which started my latest collection- Spring Cats and Sunny Factory.
The First Light-After Hodgkin
Acrylic, Gesso on Canvas on board.
30 x 40 x0.4 cm
About Spring Exhibition Series:
" What these paintings of the Spring Exhibition Series try to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; having a very daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin, making my new works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces.
These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Series.
I didn’t know where to start nor end and that is the beauty of it;
the Start and the End of this major Spring Exhibition are the in-between chapters, the artworks that come before and after would continue to take this series forward.
For now, in this period, I have curated 11 works telling a chapter of Spring Story " ---

About the painting:
« Forever Spring » is named after the Jade Vines and Dahlias in the painting. Jade Vines are one of the unique plants that bloom in early spring. Dahlias flower from summer into early winter when most plants are fading.
They are the symbols of life, vitality, and beauty.
The painterly language of these colours and semi-abstraction is a nod to Matisse and Hodgkin who are the inspirations of this latest series. - Spring Cats and Sunny Factory---Spring Exhibition 2023.

Orchids are the ones that defy the weather blooming even in the deepest winter in low temperatures.

About Birdwatch Series 2023
" Birdwatching was the passion we shared amongst many things, it is very close to our hearts. We often watched birds together. Kew was the place we stayed the most watching various bird habitats over the River Thames and lakes in the gardens. We used to watch birds for hours and talk about...everything or nothing. That is the closest moment to paradise on earth for me. Now, he is in paradise. I am continuing our birdwatching tradition here on earth, continuing talking to him through birds. And with innocent wishful thinking, I know he is listening to me...about everything. "
