This special Ink and Gold leaf on canvas created by Shizico in early autumn when Dahlias take centre stage in her garden. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints; Shizico employs Dahlias which bloom in late summer and autumn, brighten up the garden into the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope and longevity.
This painting also challenges the genre of Still Life in contemporary art. It is a testament to Shizico's creativity and her willingness to push boundaries, advancing her visual language through various materials. Fundamentally her practice is grounded in the history of art, her work is rooted in a lineage that spans from El Greco to Hiroshige to Van Gogh.
Though it is a still life, each painting is deeply personal by focusing on the cut flowers Shizico cultivated in her own garden. This approach ties her work to the seasons and the fleeting moments of time. Each painting is a one-of-a-kind, seasonal creation—ephemeral and unrepeatable. Once completed, it captures a moment that is forever gone, making Shizico’s art uniquely rare and authentically tied to the essence of impermanence.
This particular scene captures cut flowers from her own garden, bathed in the glow of a sunset through a west-facing window, with her cat quietly beside her—a tender moment of stillness and memory.
Renowned for her expressive Ink drawing and its distinctive visual language, Shizico captures the raw essence of her vision in this painting with Gold Leaf and Ink, documents and preserves the fleeting beauty of the seasons and the sweet memories it holds, froze in time on canvas.
Shizico Yi paints most of her works en plein air, directly from life and within the landscapes that inspire her. In 2015, she began gardening to create a healing space for her elderly Labrador. After her beloved dog passed, the garden evolved into a living memorial—a sanctuary where grief, love, and creativity inspired. It has since become a vital source of inspiration in her art.
Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico has spent the past decade cultivating her garden, allowing her art to grow in harmony with nature. Through every season and in all weathers, she creates her own landscapes and floral compositions—each one echoing the rhythms of life, loss, and beauty.

Autumn Embrace-Plein air-Autumn project 2024
Nothing beats a British Autumn 🍂 "Autumn Series" is one of the most personal projects of Shizico Yi; the sensitive colours, her signature expressive and confident brushstrokes are making the series an instant classic in Shizico's outstanding art career.
About Autumn Series:
To document the streets they've walked and her late dog's favourite trees, Shizico embarked on a series of Plein air paintings after her Labrador gone over to the rainbow bridge in early Autumn 2017. The project officially started in 2020 and continues in Autumn each year.
This is an enclosed corner with a pond at the basin level, embraced by rocky hills and European deciduous trees in Shizu's local heritage park, a safe haven for wildlife and offers a private corner for Shizico to paint and to contemplate.
The colours of the turning leaves symbolises aging. Standing hours each day painting plein air in chilly autumn air kept her alerted to one's vulnerability,
yet, within the colours of nature, Shizico finds the restorative energy which allows time and space to contemplate the sweet memory of loved ones who left us.
The colours of the turning leaves symbolised aging, it was smudged into the sky; under the misty autumn chill and the typical British weather, the trees take the backstage, allowing the colours to seep and dominate the space, the abstraction of the visual takes the traditional landscape genre into contemporary time.
Standing hours painting plein air in chilly autumn air kept the artist alerted to one's vulnerability, and each canvas in this series are the testimony of Shizico's tenacity and passion of Plein air painting. Within the colours of nature, Shizico finds the energy of restoration which allows her time to contemplate the sweet memory of loved ones who left.

Having a Cigarette amongst Lime Trees-Large Oil on canvas
Sold out
The avenue of 130-year-old Lime trees surrounding Shizico’s new cottage Garden captivated and inspired Shizico Yi to paint on a larger scale; with their towering heights, they create a breath-taking canopy which carves the sky into intricate negative spaces.
Shizico decided a new approach to paint negative spaces between the trees rather than the positive forms of the trees and her garden landscape.
This major shift allows her to explore the interplay of light and shadow in an unique way, emphasising the negative spaces between the trees and the sky above. In addition, Shizico painted this series in the colours she desired, a conduit for emotion, rather than landscape's real-life hues. By painting colours this way, Shizico becomes highly sensitive to the tones and shapes of the colours, rather than habitually matching her palette to reality.
These self-imposed directions give her landscapes a touch of magical aura in this Series of landscapes. This painting stands as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques; It also highlights the profound inspiration she draws from the natural surroundings especially her own gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her own landscape.
This painting is part of " Having a Cigarette... Series", which Shizico began in 2021 in memory of her beloved late partner who enjoyed his daily cigarette in the garden. Through the series, Shizico also celebrates the summer by painting en plein air, stepping away from the studio to immerse the painting process in nature over 6-8 hours each day, when weather permits.

Large Oil-130 Years Lime Trees in Yellow
Sold out
The avenue of 130-year-old Lime trees surrounding Shizico’s new cottage Garden captivated and inspired Shizico Yi to paint on a larger scale; with their towering heights, they create a breath-taking canopy which carves the sky into intricate negative spaces.
These self-imposed directions give her landscapes a touch of magical aura in this Summer Bloom Series of landscapes. This new series stands as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques; It also highlights the profound inspiration she draws from the natural surroundings especially her own gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her own landscape.
This painting is part of the Summer Bloom series, which Shizico began in 2022. She celebrates the season by painting en plein air, stepping away from the studio to immerse the painting process in nature over 6-8 hours each day, when weather permits.
Her canvas is exposed to the elements—rain, wind, and sun—infusing each piece with the vivid energy and raw force of the outdoors. The spontaneity of painting in nature brings a dynamic, living quality to every brushstroke.

Landscape Memories II 2024-Dahlias in Dusk-Sunlit Series
With strokes of Gold, Oil, Gesso and Acrylic, Shizico orchestrates a visual symphony of abstract expression in this on-going series [Landscape Memories]; it's a part of her [Sunlit Series] where she developed and explored with all sorts of mediums, in this case, gold leaf gilding brushstrokes layered with the landscape and skyscape of her homes and gardens on paintings in this series.
Shizico's unique approach to paintings in this series by erasing, rewriting and destroying the landscape in the background by painting bold strokes of gold leaf on the top layers. This concept of distraction becomes an integral part of the artwork exemplifies Shizico Yi's artistic vision.
Yellow is a colour she believes has the healing power for those afflicted by grief.
The golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape in the background. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of the landscape and the memories), and the artist herself.

La Vie en Rose- Summer Bloom Series
Summer Bloom series began in 2022, where Shizico Yi celebrating the season by painting en plein air in her garden. In 2024, she embarks on a fresh chapter with her new rose garden, which will take years to fully flourish. This Still Life oil painting is a rare piece recently unveiled from the GSY Gallery Archive, making its market debut after six years since its initial release—a truly unique addition.
It marks the beginning of Shizico Yi's painting series, {Language of Flowers}, inspired by her London Cottage Garden Project spanning from 2017 to the present. Executed plein-air in her garden, this particular piece was created on a summer night while her late dog rested, recovering from a neuroglial illness. The dog passed away that autumn, resulting in years of hiatus in Shizico Yi's painting project. As a result, paintings like this one hold rarity and significance in Shizico Yi's artistic journey.

From London with Love 2010-Original water colour and ink, Framed
This watercolour and ink masterpiece is featured in Bloomsbury's 2011 publication, showcasing the artist's sketchbook (Note 1).
Created en plein air, Shizico Yi painted this piece in front of the iconic St Pancras Station, with a view from Euston Road. The composition also encompasses the grandeur of the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, a Gothic Revival gem dating back to 1873. This historic structure not only captures the essence of the city but also captivates the imagination of visitors worldwide. For Shizico Yi, it holds a significance as the place where she bid farewell to her family embarking on the Eurostar journey to Europe.
Within Shizico's sensitive line drawings, a wave of nostalgic and sentimental emotions unfolds. The majestic red bricks, skilfully depicted, serve as a perfect homage to the building's charm and historical significance. Through her artistic lens, Shizico Yi encapsulates both the tangible and emotional aspects of this architectural landmark of London; against her distinctive collaged paper backdrop, Shizico Yi employs her signature drawing style to capture the essence of time and memory within the landscape.
The original frame (with glass at front to protect the paper) is included, a free gift to come with.
Important:
the collaged watercolour paper is about 30 x40 CM,
53 x43 x2.2 cm is the final size includes the original frame and the mat that frames the edges.

In her most recent series, 'Prayers,' Shizico incorporates Dahlias, which bloom in the autumn, bringing vibrancy to the garden even in the early winter's chill. The innocence of a cat serves as a symbol of the vitality of children. Together, these two elements beautifully convey a sense of regeneration and hope for life."
While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states.
As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones.
Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.
In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.

Magnolias-Weaver Series-Original Large Oil Canvas
Shizico Yi takes on an innovative project "The Weaver," inspired by the heritage of the beloved family Tartan and its rich lineage of the Clan.
"The Weaver" invites viewers into a world where the memory and the Now interweave in a mesmerizing display of visual creativity.
In this painting, the early spring Magnolias take centre stage; their blossoms seemingly taking flight in the air, resembling winter birds bidding farewell to the cold, poised to rise anew like a phoenix. She weaves the motif of the patterns of beloved Tartan into the painting creating a dance of abstraction and realism.
Through her art, Shizico incorporates layers of vibrant paints, seamlessly blending memories of the past ( the tartans) with the vivid reality of the present (the floras). The canvases become a harmonious visual symphony where the past and present converge like a dreamscape.
The way she weaves the materials ( gold leaf, oil and moulding mediums) on canvases further amplifies Shizico's artistic musical dialogue between materials and brushstrokes.
The painting also pays homage to cherished memories. This is one of the major piece of Shizico Yi's exhibition- Memory Landscape in June 2024. It will be in the permanent exhibition catalogue too.

Magic Bells-Original Triptych-oil on canvas boards
To Shizico, a triptych is a compilation of visual prayers; it embodies a meditative voyage akin to a form of meditation. For her, the repetition of motifs within the triptych serves as a method to revisit moments, enabling her to welcome the creation of something entirely fresh and rejuvenated.
In her latest series, "The Weaver," Shizico explores forms, layers, and time onto canvases. Applying the format of diptychs and triptychs, she creates lyrical narratives, capturing the play of light across different moments of the day over several weeks. In doing so, Yi pays homage to Monet's fascination with capturing light's nuances throughout the day.
With her unique, confident and expressive brushstrokes, Yi captured the essence of her studio garden and flowers, infusing her paintings with an enchanting charm that goes beyond mere botanical representation.
Magic Bell /Kalanchoe, its exquisite beauty captivating with its succulent blooms; blooming from late winter through spring, alongside the magnificent Magnolias, they grace the chilly months with flora splendour. In her studio, Shizico Yi found solace amidst these indoor houseplants, where she brought them to life on canvas during the winter seasons.
This series invites viewers to go on a journey through time, as Yi explores how light shapes our experiences, growth, seasons, and aging. Through each painting, she weaves a tapestry of emotions, resonating with her profound passion for art and life.

Having a Cigarette amongst Yellow and Green 2021-2023
This original oil painting painted plein-air, captures a poignant moment in Shizico's garden in London over the past two years. It serves as a personal tribute to her late partner, who cherished his moments with cigarettes in that particular corner of the garden.
The painting is part of the ongoing project titled [Constant Gardener], which Shizico Yi has been developing since 2015. It also draws inspiration from her latest series, the Golden Sunlit series, which introduces the vibrant colour of yellow to bring the painting's narrative alive.
Parallel to her gardening endeavours (see the gardening project explained below), Shizico Yi embarked on a series of drawings and plein air paintings within the Memorial Garden, capturing the essence of the blossoms and seasons, freezing them in timeless representations.
About the project:
[Constant Gardener] is a project that holds deep significance in memory of Shizico's late dog and partner. It began in 2015 when Shizico Yi initiated a gardening endeavour to create a healing space for her dog, Favour, during their battle with a neurological illness. About the painting:
To document the streets they've walked and her late dog's favourite trees, Shizico embarked on a series of Plein air paintings in autumn, the season when Favor died. This is the view of a neighbourhood street where her late dog often walked.
The colours of the turning leaves symbolise our aging. Standing hours each day painting in the chilly London autumn air kept the artist alerted to one's vulnerability, yet, within the colours of nature, one finds the energy of restoration and allowing time to contemplate the memory of their decade-long walks.

Constant Gardener-Original Oil Canvas
[Constant Gardener] and [Memory Landscape Series] are projects Shizico Yi began in 2015. She explores the forms, layers, and materials to express the relationship between space, time, and memories through installation, film, photography, painting and gardening.
Shizico painted this painting en plein air over two weeks in her garden in Scotland. The distinct Scottish landscape and buildings in the background contrast with her cottage garden creating a generous space that feels like a warm hug from Mother Nature.
[Constant Gardener] is Shizico's project to build a garden for her then-ill dog to recover from a neurology disease; after Favor, her Labrador died, the project continues as a Memorial Garden to honour the memories of her loved ones. Her London and Scotland gardens became the centre and springboard for ideas for her paintings; over the decade, Mother Nature and Animals became her ultimate muse.
In this painting, the power of the landscape and its healing tranquillity are heightened by brushstrokes gilded with Gold Leaf.
In recent years, Shizico has applied gold leaf as a conduit to portray the dimensions between memory and present moments.
Time travels between different surfaces, and the mind wanders in this painting. It is a key work in the solo exhibition[Memory Landscape], June 2024. It is in the permanent exhibition catalogue.

Original-Winter Blooms 2024
Winter holds a unique significance in Shizico's art practice. While she dedicates full time to plein air painting from spring to autumn, the winter months see her immersed in studio work. The method and setting Shizico chooses play a pivotal role in shaping the essence, energy, and scale of her artworks.
This particular painting was made in her indoor Studio-cum-Greenhouse. Bathed in the soft glow of Christmas lights, the warm reflections from the baubles and surrounded by her lush indoor plant collection, Shizico was able to conjure up this imaginary dreamscape of a magical winter garden of ever green frozen in time on canvas.

Original-Camellias with Pink Willow Tree
Within the patterns of her beloved Tartans, Shizico weaves botanic elements of the season when this painting was created with the essence of Tartan into a visual dance of the surrealism and realism.
Camellias, known for their delicate and luxurious blooms, emerge around Christmas and persist through into the early spring, heralding the vibrant colours in the mist of wintery weather. Willow's catkins are the earliest coming into blooms in the early spring, both plants are the welcoming sight in after the cold winter. Both are featured in this painting.
Through her art, Shizico incorporates the Tartan motifs at the faded background beneath layers of vibrant paints, seamlessly blending her signature Japanese woodblock print style, weaving memories of the past ( the tartans) with the vivid reality of the present ( the floras ).
The painting becomes a harmonious visual symphony where the past and present converge like a duet of abstract and realism on the canvas amplifies Shizico's visual musical; "The Weaver" inviting viewers into a world where memory and present interweaving in a mesmerizing display of creativity.
