In her latest series, titled 'Prayers' Shizico employs various type of Dahlias as symbols of peace. Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope for life.
The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems (Hope Spring) that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown. After nature reclaims the places where people once lived, this poem reflects the enduring impact of war, with families broken and displaced.
While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states. As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones. Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.
In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.
The 'Sunlit' series is Shizico's exploration of the colour yellow and its impact on individuals dealing with grief. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints and a nod to calligraphy tradition.

Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf in two tones (copper) on yellow gesso and paint.
She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
