On Hold-Primary Colour Series-Blue Moon Field is one of Shizico Yi's latest large painting for her new projects, inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition. The series is a part of "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develop her visual language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow
Painting the light in its shadowy forms under the once in a Blue moon light this September, the painting documents a collection of butterflies glowing between the dahlias field under the blue moon. She dedicate her days to painting en plein air in her garden and outdoor landscapes during every Spring to Autumn season.
This painting is a part of Sunlit Project, where Shizico explore the artistic capabilities of the colour yellow and the connection between the materials, the subjects explored (deeper meanings behind nature) and the artist-self.
She incorporated gilding techniques with gold leaves to push βyellowβ further, resulting in a visual language reminiscent of wood block prints. In this series, Shizico restricts the colour palette, combines monochromatic tones, showcasing the interplay of yellow against various layers of black.
About Sunlit series
Shizico Yi embarked upon an odyssey in summer 2023 to create a series of plein air paintings. "Sunlit Series" meticulously crafted on all mediums, gold leaf gilding on her brushstrokes captured within a restrained palette of yellow, and mono palettes for each painting. With strokes of gold, ink, gesso acrylic and other black mediums, she orchestrates a visual symphony.
Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and the wildlife who come to visit almost daily in Summer and Autumn time. Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials expressed fully in this painting, gold leaf on dark ink, depths of yellow with grey bring the garden in the Blue Moon night . She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light in the night through the layering of the mono tone of colours. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves and ink adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
