About the Exhibition:
" It was the sombre news of my uncle’s passing that started the whole thing. He was the last living link to my father's cherished brothers, and with his departure, we, my close cousins and I, became fatherless, bidding farewell to an entire generation of sons, all dear to our grandma, who meant the world to me. In his mourning, the grief of my father resurfaced, and my thoughts drifted to them, the brothers, reunited in the afterlife with our grandma in the light. On that day, I started a daily ritual of chanting Heart Sutras to honour my uncle. I can’t help to notice that butterflies came to my garden window every time I chanted. One of these mornings, following a session of Heart Sutra, I strolled into the garden, the left-over sound of the Sutra still echoing between my ears. Its vibrations offered solace, held me up from being overwhelmed by the waves of grief. And then it happened—a giant Red Admiral Butterfly flew directly towards my face, then flew over my left shoulder. It was a rare occurrence during that week, and I couldn't help but feel that my uncle had come to bid me farewell. That very afternoon, I started my first painting of this new series for the exhibition, which I later named the painting 'Heart Sutra for a Butterfly.' I wasn't entirely certain where this series would lead ( it's often the best way to develop new works), so I allowed myself to flow with it. Inspired by the majestic Red Admiral, I started a series of paintings using only primary colours ( the striking colours on Red Admiral’s wings). With these three colours ( Red, Blue and Yellow), I then creating a series of garden landscapes featured the butterflies I had seen each day. " --- Shizico Yi 2023, London |

Then came the Blue Moon day, coinciding with my birthday in the lunar calendar this year. It was a rare phenomenon —a combination of a Blue Moon and Super Moon. I wasn't sure if I'd ever witness such an event again ( next one is 2037), so I was determined to make the most of it.
I painted under the moon's glow in the garden, baked a frozen pizza from Ocado, ironically yet perfectly shaped as my birthday cake. I realise the grease-stained paper plate from the pizza package was looking exactly like the full moon, so I used it to paint this birthday blue moon painting, marking the second phase of this latest project, comprising the body of works all featured in this exhibition. The title of the exhibition, 'Across Universes,' was an answer to my birthday prayers . That morning, I was seeking a sign from my late partner, asking if a song letting me know I wasn't alone on that day. And there it was—the melody came to me, John Lennon's voice in my head singing the first line of Across the Universe. I sang along, with tears welled up as I understood what that meant… It was decided on that day, this would be the title of this collection for the exhibition. Over the next 60 days, I painted the entire body of these new works, with that song as the constant companion, all in pursuit of this 'Sunlit Series', the exploration of the colour yellow—a promise I had made to my late dog and to myself six years ago. ( another story some of you knew the reason why..) So, here I go, in search of all kinds of materials and ways to use yellow. I apply various sorts of mediums, gold leaf gilding on the brushstrokes captured within a restrained palette of yellow and mono palettes for each painting. The gilded gold offers me the liberty to portray time and space, both in tangible and ethereal realms; in a literal and conceptual sense. These shimmering gilded strokes, not just catalysts to the hues of yellow, it also serves as a tool for my artistic expression. With each gilded stroke, I can travel through the landscapes of memory in my paintings, where time and space are beyond these earthly ones. Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the yellow hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by Favor garden and the daily wildlife visitors. I also insisted to paint all the paintings of this series plein air, therefore to ensure each painting was born not from a 2D picture in studio light but under the sunlight in the 3D space and time. Through the layering of monochromatic colours in situ, I aimed to construct a mystical, imaginary world from the reality. With strokes of gold, gouache, oil pastel , gesso and acrylic and oil, I want to create a visual symphony celebrate the lights which is much needed especially in these last few years. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold, copper, and silver gildings, along with ink, adds yet another layer of tactile fascination. By gilding the brushstrokes in these paintings, it allows me to develop a unique bond with the canvas surface, as it compelled me to touch each gilded stroke during the finishing process. The more I handled and caressed the surface, the more the gilded lines glistened. This tactile satisfaction is akin to a sculptor's connection with their work and the installation I did in the exhibition space. Here, all these relationships and movements distil into a single painted surface, brought to life through gilding. The final stage of this project takes the form of Prayers Series.
In this latest collection, I've chosen Cat as a symbol of innocence and peace. The dahlias, blooming in autumn and brightening the garden amid early winter's chill, symbolise regeneration and hope for life. The text featured in these paintings (Prayer Series) is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD). This poignant poem paints a profound picture of the landscape in a war-torn zone in his hometown. It speaks of nature reclaiming the places where people once lived, reflecting the lasting impact of war, with families broken and displaced. |

Primary Colour Series - Gladiolus Glorious is Shizico Yi's latest project.
This painting was created plein air over several consecutive days in her cottage garden in London, Summer, 2023.
The series serves as a seamless continuation of the Sunlit Series, where Shizico refined her pictorial language, focusing on the colour yellow. In this new series, she has introduced primary colours into the Sunlit project, delving into the tension and interplay between two chosen primary colours within each painting.
Every artwork within this series adheres to a restricted colour palette, allowing the depth and shading of each colour to resonate, much like the interplay of musical notes in a duet melody.
Similar to the Sunlit Series, all these paintings take form en plein air. Shizico deliberately departs from the confines of the studio, immersing herself within the very spaces she portrays. She belives that this approach transforms an artist into not just an observer (paint from photos in studio) but also an active participant in the essence of each moment.

𝙿𝚛𝚊𝚢𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚂𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚜- 𝚂𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗 𝙰𝚞𝚝𝚞𝚖𝚗- Original
In her latest series, titled 'Prayers' Shizico employs various type of Dahlias as symbols of peace. Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope for life.
The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems (Hope Spring) that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown. After nature reclaims the places where people once lived, this poem reflects the enduring impact of war, with families broken and displaced.
While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states. As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones. Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.
In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.
The 'Sunlit' series is Shizico's exploration of the colour yellow and its impact on individuals dealing with grief. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints and a nod to calligraphy tradition.

Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf in two tones (copper) on yellow gesso and paint.
She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.

Drawings are the most intimate works of Shizico Yi, therefore it is rare to have a few coming to the market and be available.
Artwork Description:
Shizico made this drawing plein air in her garden during the early autumn's Indian summer heat wave of 2023, later she hand painted and gilded gold leaf in the studio. This work is a part of Exhibition: Across the Universes , GSY Studio Gallery. London. 2023.
Shizico believes drawing as a direct and intimate means of contouring one's life and interpreting the surrounding world. Each line becomes a tactile connection to the nuanced details of objects and the landscapes she inhabits, creating a visual narrative that evolves with a person's life and memories.
A distinctive and signature element in Shizico's artistic repertoire is the use of gilded gold. This visual language becomes an instrument through which she plays with space, imparting an effect reminiscent of Japanese block prints and Kintsugi (金継ぎ), the art of "golden joinery." The incorporation of gilded gold adds a fresh language to the drawing, introducing another dimension that deepens the fascination inherent in Shizico's work.

𝙿𝚛𝚊𝚢𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚂𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚜-𝚂𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗 𝙰𝚞𝚝𝚞𝚖𝚗 II - 𝙾𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕
In her latest series, titled 'Prayers,' Shizico employs Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolizing regeneration and hope for life.
The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown.
The 'Sunlit' series is an exploration of the colour yellow and its impact on individuals dealing with grief. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints. It nestles within Shizico's "Golden Period," a profound exploration centred around the captivating hue of yellow. It is a colour she believes having the healing power for those afflicted by grief. The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of nature), and the artist herself. © Shizico Yi

Drawings are the most intimate works of Shizico Yi, therefore it is rare to have few only coming to the market and be available.
This is a drawing study of her cat in the garden over the few days, the nature of a cat constantly on the move made a difficult subject to draw from life, that is why to Shizico insist to paint and study from life not from pictures so it challenges the image and the process.
Gilded gold is another signature of Shizico's materials, she use the visual language of the gilded gold as an instrument to play with the space and to achieve the effect of that similar to Japanese block print, which brought another dimension to the fascination of the drawing.
Drawing vs the artist:
Shizico believes that the act of drawing is a very direct way to contour one's life and how she sees the world around her. Every line is a way to touch each fine grain of a thing. The drawing contours a person's life and memory, like people do throughout one's life.

In her latest series, titled 'Prayers,' Shizico employs the cat as a symbol of innocence and peace. Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolizing regeneration and hope for life. The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown. After nature reclaims the places where people once lived, this poem reflects the enduring impact of war, with families broken and displaced.

Primary Colour Series-Spring in Autumn is one of Shizico Yi's latest projects, inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition.
The series is a continuation of her "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develops her pictorial language, with and around the colour of yellow: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow and the celebration of the sun light which bring much needed warmth in the UK.
With strokes of gold, gesso and acrylic and oil, she orchestrates a visual symphony.
Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf on yellow gesso and oil paint contrast with the inky black brushstrokes. She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour and black line drawing. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
