On Hold-To Fathers Series is a heartfelt tribute to her late and beloved family members.
From each poem, she weaves a corresponding painting, collectively known as To Fathers. First of these pieces is "Heart Sutra for a Butterfly," draws inspiration from a poignant personal experience.
During the mourning weeks for her late uncle, Shizico would chant sutras in his memory. Remarkably, she would often spot butterflies just outside her garden window after these daily chanting. One day, following another sutra, a majestic Red Admiral butterfly flew directly toward her face in the garden. This encounter made her contemplating the magical connection between the timing of the butterflies and her sutras.
Building on her Golden Series, Shizu introduces the element of gold into this new series as a means to explore visual spaces. It symbolises the coexistence of the earthly and the divine, life and the afterlife, day and night, and the interplay of yin and yang.
This painting marks the beginning of this special series, To Fathers. Within this series, Shizico Yi has penned poems dedicated to the fathers in her personal life, including relatives, friends, and friends' fathers.
These poems provide a unique perspective, written from the viewpoint of their children, wives, and from the fathers' own reflections.
