Dusk to Dawn is part of Shizico Yiβs Primary Colour Series, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and the rhythmic calligraphy. The work continues Yiβs long-running Sunlit Series, in which she explores light not as illumination alone, but as shadow, reflection, and emotional presence.
This painting was created across two opposing moments of the day. At dusk, Yi painted facing east as the sun set behind her, casting elongated shadows of dahlia leaves across the garden. At dawn, she returned to the canvas facing west, capturing the fleeting, dappled light as the sun rose and filtered through tree canopies. The result is a dialogue between night and morning, stillness and awakening.
At the heart of the Sunlit Series is Yiβs investigation into the colour yellow β a hue she associates with healing, and renewal after long British winters. Gold and copper gold elements are introduced not as decoration, but as light, embedded into the surface. Against dark ink and layered gesso and oil , the scene of a garden forms and wildlife silhouettes to emerge with quiet intensity.
Working with a restrained palette, Yi builds atmosphere through contrast: dark ink against radiant gold, softness against structure, revealing subtle shifts where materials interact and light changes with the viewerβs movement. Β
This work sits within Yiβs ongoing βGolden Periodβ, a rich body of work centred on yellow as an emotional and restorative force β particularly in response to grief and seasonal transition. Dusk to Dawn stands as a meditative reflection on time, nature, and the intimate relationship between the artist, her garden, and the materials she works with; provenance archive viewable at Gsystudio.com and Shizicoyi.com
