On Hold- Primary Red Series- Dahlias and Butterfly is one of Shizico Yi's latest projects, inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition.
The series is a continuation of her "Sunlit Series" where Shizico develop her visual language, with and around the colour of yellow this is where the gold leaf comes to play: it's an exploration of the healing power of yellow and the celebration of the sun light which bring much needed warmth after the long cold winter in the UK.
About Sunlit series
Shizico Yi embarked upon an odyssey in summer 2023 to create a series of plein air paintings. "Sunlit Series" meticulously crafted on all mediums, gold leaf gilding on her brushstrokes captured within a restrained palette of yellow, and mono palettes for each painting. With strokes of gold, gouache, oil pastel , gesso and acrylic, she orchestrates a rich visual symphony celebrate the lights.
Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the red hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and the wildlife who come to visit almost daily all year round.
Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials expressed fully in this painting, gold leaf on dark lines, depths of red bring nature alive onto the canvas. She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world through the layering of the mono tone of colours.
The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves and ink adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.
