A distinctive and signature in Shizico's artistic repertoire is the use of gilded gold. This visual language becomes an instrument through which she plays with space, imparting an effect reminiscent of Japanese block prints and Kintsugi(金継ぎ), the art of "golden joinery." Winter Sale Special Set Offer!

This is a set of Original paintings on Canvas Boards includes 2 paintings in this series:

Primary Colour Series-

Gladiolus Glorious + Gladiolus Common Blue

Height: 40 cm Width: 60 cm Depth: 4 mm / Each painting

These two paintings were meticulously crafted en plein air over the course of two weeks, brought to life within the enchanting sanctuary of her cottage garden nestled in the heart of London. This special set comprises two paintings from the Primary Colour Series: 'Gladiolus Glorious' and 'Gladiolus Common Blue.'

The series is a continuation of Shizico's 'Sunlit Series,' which commenced in spring 2023 all the way into winter. Here, Shizico refines her visual language, focusing on the colour yellowβ€”a symbol of healing and a tribute to sunlight.

Each artwork in this series adheres to a restricted colour palette, allowing the depth and shading of each hue to resonate, much like the interplay of musical notes in a duet.

Shizico deliberately departs from the confines of the studio, immersing herself in the spaces she portrays ( re:plein air painting). She believes this approach transforms an artist into not just an observer but also an active participant in each moment's essence.

'Gladiolus Glorious' and 'Gladiolus Common Blue' stand as Shizico Yi's artistic endeavor, showcasing her mastery of visual language interwoven with vibrant yellow hues. Within this exploration lies a profound journey into the curative essence of yellowβ€”a celebration of the sun's radiant embrace heralding the arrival of much-needed warmth after the prolonged chill of winter.

"Some paintings take years," Shizico Yi told the curator, revealing that this particular artwork falls into that category. It's a piece she returned to after years of living with it, a creative journey that had a moment of revelation inspired by Claude Monet's The Rouen Cathedral Series, which Claude Monet concurrently painting up to 14 versions of it, shifting from one canvas to another based on the changing play of light throughout the day. Shizico Yi drew inspiration from Monet's bold exploration of contrasts between light and dark in the sky and the architecture. His daring use of white in this series intrigued her.

Fast forward five years, Shizico finally uncovered the essence of the original drawing on this canvas. This prompted her to experiment with the interplay of white and dark tones in the background. The result is a breathtaking visual feast of colours and light, showcasing intricate forms and a profound sense of spatial depth.

The majestic red bricks, skilfully depicted, serve as a perfect homage to the building's charm and historical significance. Through her artistic lens, Shizico Yi encapsulates both the tangible and emotional aspects of this architectural landmark of London; against her distinctive collaged paper backdrop, Shizico Yi employs her signature drawing style to capture the essence of time and memory within the landscape.

Snowy Sakura-GSY Gallery Archive Collection 2018

Β£0.00

Sold out

This rare piece, recently revealed from the GSY Gallery Archive, is now making its market debut after five years. This marks its first appearance since its initial release, bringing a distinctive allure to its presence.

Shizico Yi painted this piece plein air to celebrate the arrival of spring during the late March Equinox in 2018. Despite an unusual cold front bringing snow to London during this time, the Sakura in Shizico's garden emerged resilient and captivating. While early tulips succumbed to frosty rains, the enchanting beauty of the Sakura served as profound inspiration for Shizico, culminating in the creation of this painting.

On a side note, this piece carries profound significance as one of the few works Shizico undertook since the loss of her beloved dog to a long-term illness later, the loss of her partner. The impact of these losses left Shizico unable to paint for years, and it wasn't until later in 2022 that she began to find her way back to canvas.

Grief is a recurrent theme in her works. Through her art practice and gardening, Shizico sought solace, truth, and strength in the act of living.Β

Her paintings, sculptures and installations were born from a complex journey of loss and rediscovery, encapsulates powerful chapters in Shizico's artistic and personal narrative.

In her most recent series, 'Prayers,' Shizico incorporates Dahlias, which bloom in the autumn, bringing vibrancy to the garden even in the early winter's chill. The innocence of a cat serves as a symbol of the vitality of children. Together, these two elements beautifully convey a sense of regeneration and hope for life."

While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states.Β

As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones.Β

Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.Β

In times like these, artists can feel a deep sense of responsibility. It goes beyond merely creating aesthetically pleasing pictures; it's about infusing art with meaning and documenting the era we live in. It's also a form of self-reflection on the role of the artist in society.Β Β

In this series, Shizico delves deep into the intricacies of form and the bold contrast interplay of yellow and black. She then introduces a third element- in this case, the golf leaf; adding layers of complexity to each composition. This elevates the pictorial tension, completes the storytelling of the picture, which made the painting stands out with its visuals narratives.

Within Shizico’s Golden Period series, each painting serves as both an exploration of a chosen major element and a heartfelt homage to the abstract movements in the mid-20th century.

The colour palettes in these pieces extended from Shizico's renowned Sunlit Series, creating a harmonious continuity in her artistic journey of her Golden Period.Β

Drawings are the most intimate works of Shizico Yi, therefore it is rare to have a few coming to the market and be available.Β

Artwork Description:Β Β Β

Shizico made this drawing plein air in her garden during the early autumn's Indian summer heat wave of 2023, later she hand painted and gilded gold leaf in the studio. This work is a part of Exhibition: Across the Universes Β , GSY Studio Gallery. London. 2023.

Shizico believes drawing as a direct and intimate means of contouring one's life and interpreting the surrounding world. Each line becomes a tactile connection to the nuanced details of objects and the landscapes she inhabits, creating a visual narrative that evolves with a person's life and memories.

A distinctive and signature element in Shizico's artistic repertoire is the use of gilded gold. This visual language becomes an instrument through which she plays with space, imparting an effect reminiscent of Japanese block prints and Kintsugi (ι‡‘ηΆ™γŽ), the art of "golden joinery." The incorporation of gilded gold adds a fresh language to the drawing, introducing another dimension that deepens the fascination inherent in Shizico's work.

In her latest series, titled 'Prayers' Shizico employs various type of Dahlias as symbols of peace. Dahlias, which bloom in autumn, brighten up the garden amidst the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope for life.

The writing in the paintings is a reference to a poem by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of his poignant poems (Hope Spring) that portrays the landscape in a war zone in his hometown. After nature reclaims the places where people once lived, this poem reflects the enduring impact of war, with families broken and displaced.

While developing this new series, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were at their most devastating states. As an artist working in the studio, there's a sense of helplessness in the face of such human suffering in war zones. Through these paintings, Shizico aims to convey her heartfelt prayers to these conflict-ridden places and the people who endure immense suffering.

Each painting within this series aims to negotiate an unique facet, where the golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of images inspired by her garden and Shizico's unique take on certain painterly materials; in this case, gold leaf in two tones (copper) on yellow gesso and paint.

She wanted to create a mystic imaginary world of light through the layering of the mono tone of single colour. The interplay of these contrasting elements upon the textured surface of gold leaves adds yet another layer of tactile fascination.

Primary Colour Series - Gladiolus Glorious is Shizico Yi's latest project.

This painting was created plein air over several consecutive days in her cottage garden in London, Summer, 2023.

The series serves as a seamless continuation of the Sunlit Series, where Shizico refined her pictorial language, focusing on the colour yellow. In this new series, she has introduced primary colours into the Sunlit project, delving into the tension and interplay between two chosen primary colours within each painting.

Every artwork within this series adheres to a restricted colour palette, allowing the depth and shading of each colour to resonate, much like the interplay of musical notes in a duet melody.

Similar to the Sunlit Series, all these paintings take form en plein air. Shizico deliberately departs from the confines of the studio, immersing herself within the very spaces she portrays. She belives that this approach transforms an artist into not just an observer (paint from photos in studio) but also an active participant in the essence of each moment.

She believes that this approach transforms an artist into not just an observer (paint from photos in studio) but also an active participant in the essence of each moment.

About Sunlit Project 2023:

Shizico Yi's Sunlit Series is a celebration of Yellow and an exploration of its healing power. The Sunlit Series nestles gracefully within Shizico's "Golden Period," a profound exploration cantered around the captivating hue of yellow.

It is a colour she believes possesses healing energy for those afflicted by grief.

The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the artist, and the subjects ( with the meaning of the garden she grows, and her personal grief )
