Story of Summer Bloom Series
In 2017, Shizico lost her beloved dog, Favor, after a four-year battle with neurological disease. Shizico began gardening in 2015 to create a healing space for Favor. After his passing, the garden evolved as Favor Memorial Garden, a tribute to his precious presence. The garden and this art project continue evolving to this day. Alongside gardening, Shizico began creating a series of drawings and plein-air paintings in this garden, capturing the blooms and seasons to preserve them in time. Summer Bloom series began in 2022 where Shizico Yi celebrated the season by painting en plein air in her garden.
Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico Yi is reaping the rewards of her labour as it inspires her while serving as a living studio, where her art grows alongside nature and where she makes her own kind of landscapes.
Fundamentally, Shizico Yi’s practice is grounded in the history of art; her work is rooted in a lineage that spans from El Greco to Van Gogh to the eastern master like Hiroshige. Her painting stands as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques and the profound inspiration she draws from her natural surroundings especially her own gardens.
