This special Ink and Gold leaf on canvas created by Shizico in early autumn when Dahlias take centre stage in her garden. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints; Shizico employs Dahlias which bloom in late summer and autumn, brighten up the garden into the early winter chill, symbolising regeneration and hope and longevity.
This painting also challenges the genre of Still Life in contemporary art. It is a testament to Shizico's creativity and her willingness to push boundaries, advancing her visual language through various materials. Fundamentally her practice is grounded in the history of art, her work is rooted in a lineage that spans from El Greco to Hiroshige to Van Gogh.
Though it is a still life, each painting is deeply personal by focusing on the cut flowers Shizico cultivated in her own garden. This approach ties her work to the seasons and the fleeting moments of time. Each painting is a one-of-a-kind, seasonal creation—ephemeral and unrepeatable. Once completed, it captures a moment that is forever gone, making Shizico’s art uniquely rare and authentically tied to the essence of impermanence.
This particular scene captures cut flowers from her own garden, bathed in the glow of a sunset through a west-facing window, with her cat quietly beside her—a tender moment of stillness and memory.

Shizico Yi paints most of her works en plein air, directly from life and within the landscapes that inspire her. In 2015, she began gardening to create a healing space for her elderly Labrador. After her beloved dog passed, the garden evolved into a living memorial—a sanctuary where grief, love, and creativity inspired. It has since become a vital source of inspiration in her art.
Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico has spent the past decade cultivating her garden, allowing her art to grow in harmony with nature. Through every season and in all weathers, she creates her own landscapes and floral compositions—each one echoing the rhythms of life, loss, and beauty.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
