"Autumn Series" is one of the most personal projects of Shizico Yi; the sensitive colours, her signature expressive and confident brushstrokes are making the series an instant classic in Shizico's outstanding art career.
About Autumn Series:
To document the streets they've walked and her late dog's favourite trees, Shizico embarked on a series of Plein air paintings after her Labrador gone over to the rainbow bridge in early Autumn 2017. The project officially started in 2020 and continues in Autumn each year.
This is an enclosed corner with a pond at the basin level, embraced by rocky hills and European deciduous trees in Shizu's local heritage park, a safe haven for wildlife and offers a private corner for Shizico to paint and to contemplate.
The colours of the turning leaves symbolises aging. Standing hours each day painting plein air in chilly autumn air kept her alerted to one's vulnerability,
yet, within the colours of nature, Shizico finds the restorative energy which allows time and space to contemplate the sweet memory of loved ones who left us.
The colours of the turning leaves symbolised aging, it was smudged into the sky; under the misty autumn chill and the typical British weather, the trees take the backstage, allowing the colours to seep and dominate the space, the abstraction of the visual takes the traditional landscape genre into contemporary time.
Standing hours painting plein air in chilly autumn air kept the artist alerted to one's vulnerability, and each canvas in this series are the testimony of Shizico's tenacity and passion of Plein air painting. Within the colours of nature, Shizico finds the energy of restoration which allows her time to contemplate the sweet memory of loved ones who left.
This year, Shizico Yi focuses on a new approach which she paints the negative spaces rather than the positive forms as most artist would.
Each stroke is the process of carve out the spaces around the outline of the objects whether is a tree, plants, ponds, clouds or the outline of the rocky hills.
This major shift allows her to explore the interplay of light and shadow in a new unique way, emphasizing the negative space between the flowers and the landscape/skylines around them, by doing so, she brought the floras in a new light and to new forms.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
