This series of paintings are the result of Shizico's creative journey from the early 2024 when she had a moment of revelation inspired by Claude Monet, especially his The Rouen Cathedral Series, which Monet concurrently painting up to 14 versions of it, shifting from one canvas to another based on the changing play of light throughout the day.
These Memory Landscape paintings are solely painted plein air in Shizu's own gardens.
Shizico drew inspiration from Monet's bold exploration of contrasts between light and dark between the sky and the architecture, the daring use of white in his series intrigued her working on gesso heavily to tone the colour palate for these two paintings.
She uncovered the essence of the layering technique to build depth on this canvas by experimenting with the interplay of white and dark tones in the background.
The result is a breath-taking visual feast of colours and light, showcasing intricate forms and a profound sense of spatial depth.

About the Lime tree in Summer Bloom series (began in 2022):
Shizico Yi celebrates the season of summer by painting en plein air in her garden and locations. 2024, she embarks on a fresh chapter with her new cottage garden. In the first summer of the new Memorial Garden, the avenue of 130-year-old lime trees surrounding it captivated her; this inspired Shizu to paint a series of Lime Trees against the backdrop of everchanging sky colours in the long summer evening
These ancient trees, with their towering heights, create a breath-taking canopy and carve the sky into intricate negative spaces,
Shizico decided a new approach which she focuses on painting these negative spaces rather than the positive forms.
This major shift allows her to explore the interplay of light and shadow in a new unique way, emphasizing the negative and positive spaces between the trees and the sky above.
Shizico used colours as the device for emotion rather than in reality with this series. By painting colours this way, Shizico becomes highly sensitive to tones and shapes and a new sense of freedom arrived in the painting, giving her landscapes a touch of magical aura in this series of Summer Bloom landscapes.
This new series of paintings stand as a testament to her imagination, bold and always evolving techniques and the profound inspiration she draws from her natural surroundings especially her own gardens where she grows plants and re-makes her very own landscape.

About the Artist
Shizico Yi is available for commission.
Dr. Shizico Yi is a UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
